Purchasing a MyVallox ventilation unit

What should be considered when choosing the right ventilation unit model?

  1. Airflow capacity: Choose a ventilation unit with airflow rates that match the size of your home and its ventilation requirements. 
  2. Energy efficiency: Select a ventilation unit with a high heat recovery efficiency. 
  3. Versatile control options: Make sure the ventilation unit can be controlled in the way that suits you best, such as with a wall-mounted control panel, a kitchen cooker hood, remotely via your mobile device, or integrated into a home automation system. 
  4. Automation: Ensure that the unit includes advanced defrosting automation and built-in indoor air quality sensors. 
  5. Noise level: Choose a ventilation unit that operates as quietly as possible, especially if it will be installed in the kitchen, bathroom, utility room, or walk-in closet. 
  6. Filter availability: Make sure that compatible replacement filters are readily available. Original manufacturer filters are generally the best option. 
  7. Serviceability and durability: Consider how easy the unit is to maintain and clean, so that its performance and cleanliness can be preserved over the long term.

How do I know which Vallox 125 CFi model is suitable to replace my old unit?

The different Vallox 125 CFi models have duct outlet configurations that match many older ventilation unit models, or they require only minor ductwork modifications. The letter in the unit name (A-H) indicates the model type, meaning the arrangement and location of the duct outlets.

In addition, you must verify the unit’s handedness (left-hand or right-hand version), which determines the orientation of the duct outlets in the top section of the unit.

The appropriate replacement model for an existing unit can be checked using the compatibility table (PDF).

For example, the 125A model has the same duct outlet layout as the MUH Ilmava 100, MUH Ilmava 120, and Vallox 121 SE/MC units. These models can therefore be replaced directly with a Vallox 125 CFi unit without any ductwork modifications.

How does the constant airflow feature work?

A standard ventilation unit adjusts the fan speed but cannot compensate for airflow changes caused by factors such as a window being left open temporarily or reduced airflow due to dirty filters.

A MyVallox ventilation unit equipped with the constant airflow feature maintains balanced airflow under all conditions by compensating for pressure differences caused by external factors.

For example, when a filter becomes dirty, the unit automatically increases airflow in the direction of the clogged filter to compensate for the increased resistance, thereby maintaining balanced supply and exhaust air volumes.

What do the abbreviations CFi, MV, MC, SE, K, VKL, R, and L mean?

The abbreviations CFi, MV, MC, and SE that appear after the product name of a Vallox ventilation unit refer to the unit’s control system or operating method.

  • CFi: The letters CF stand for Constant Flow, meaning the unit maintains constant airflow. The “i” stands for Intelligent, referring to the smart total-airflow control that makes commissioning and setup easier than before.
  • MV, MC, and SE: These abbreviations indicate the unit’s control system:
    • MV = MyVallox Control
    • MC = Simple Control
    • SE = Controlled with a Vallox Digit SED controller
  • K: Indicates a ventilation unit with an integrated cooker hood.
  • VKL: Refers to a model equipped with a water-based post-heating coil.
  • R and L: These letters indicate the unit’s handedness (orientation).
    • R (Right-hand model): Outdoor air enters the unit from the right side of the center line.
    • L (Left-hand model): Outdoor air enters the unit from the left side of the center line.

The locations of the other duct connections are correspondingly mirrored from one side to the other.

What is the difference between AC and EC fans?

An AC fan (alternating current fan) operates using traditional alternating current (AC), and its control is typically based on voltage or frequency adjustment. AC fans have been widely used for many years, but their energy efficiency and control capabilities are relatively limited.

An EC fan (electronically commutated fan) is a modern direct current (DC) fan with built-in electronic controls. EC fans are more energy-efficient, quieter, and allow precise speed control, for example through percentage-based adjustment via Vallox control systems. EC fans also enable more accurate balancing of supply and exhaust airflow rates while reducing electricity consumption.

Vallox MV and MyVallox CFi ventilation units use EC fans because they meet modern energy-efficiency requirements and provide versatile control options.

What additional sensors can be used with MyVallox ventilation units?

MyVallox ventilation units always come with built-in humidity and carbon dioxide (CO₂) sensors.

As optional accessories, they can also be connected to room-mounted humidity, CO₂, and VOC sensors.

  • Humidity sensors monitor indoor moisture levels and help the unit adjust ventilation automatically.
  • CO₂ sensors measure carbon dioxide levels, enabling demand-based ventilation according to occupancy.
  • VOC sensors detect volatile organic compounds and other indoor air pollutants, allowing the ventilation system to respond to changes in air quality.

How can Vallox MyVallox ventilation units be connected to a Modbus network?

Vallox MyVallox ventilation units can be connected directly to a Modbus network without the need for a separate adapter. Modbus functionality is built into MyVallox ventilation units as a standard feature.

How can MyVallox ventilation units be connected to a KNX smart home system?

MyVallox MV ventilation units can be connected to a KNX smart home system using a KNX bus converter, which is available as an optional accessory.

The KNX bus converter enables communication between the MyVallox ventilation unit and the KNX automation system, allowing ventilation functions to be monitored and controlled through the KNX network.

Can MyVallox ventilation units be equipped with a cooling or preheating coil connected to a ground-source heat pump system?

A coil connected to the ground-source heat pump collector loop is not available as a built-in option in Vallox ventilation units. However, a MLV duct radiator can be connected to the ventilation system.

The MyVallox unit’s automation system can provide control signals for the pump and solenoid valve of the cooling or preheating circuit. This allows the MLV duct radiator to be used for:

  • Preheating incoming outdoor air during cold weather
  • Cooling supply air during warmer periods

How do you connect a MyVallox ventilation unit to the internet?

The ventilation unit is equipped with a LAN cable, which is connected directly to the router. The ventilation unit does not have a built-in wireless Wi-Fi connection.

If it is not possible to connect the ventilation unit to the router using a cable, a Wi-Fi repeater (Wi-Fi extender) can be installed near the unit. In that case, the ventilation unit’s LAN cable is connected to the Wi-Fi repeater, which is connected wirelessly to the home’s Wi-Fi network.

How can a MyVallox unit be controlled remotely?

MyVallox units, meaning MV and CFi models, can be registered to the browser-based MyVallox Cloud service using an internet connection. Through this service, the units can be controlled over the internet using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Registration to the service is free of charge.

With a remote connection, all the same functions can be controlled as with the local control panel. Instructions for registering the unit can be found in the device manual and in Vallox WebHelp 

If desired, the unit can also be controlled by connecting it to a building automation system or by connecting it to the home network, allowing it to be controlled through the MyVallox Home service using a device connected to the same home network.

Vallox does not provide a separate application for controlling the ventilation unit.

Can MyVallox ventilation units compensate for the negative pressure caused by a cooker hood or central vacuum system?

Partly, yes.

The exhaust airflow of a cooker hood or central vacuum system can be greater than the total ventilation airflow of the entire dwelling, so it may not always be possible to fully compensate for it with a ventilation unit, unless the unit is equipped with the constant airflow feature. With a CFi unit, negative pressure should not occur.

Compensation with MyVallox MV-units requires a contact output (switching contacts) from the cooker hood, central vacuum cleaner or a pressure difference switch connected to them. The control voltage received from the MV unit is brought through these contacts back to the digital input. At the controller of the MyVallox unit, choose Self-programmed input as the setting for this digital input. After that, choose the desired power for the supply and extract fans in the self-programmed input settings.

What types of controllers can I get for my MyVallox ventilation unit?

MyVallox CFi and MV ventilation units can be controlled with the MyVallox Control controller supplied with the unit, which is based on separate modes, such as Home and Automatic mode, selected by the user. The unit can also be controlled with the newer MyVallox Touch controller, either in parallel or on its own. The Touch controller includes Home, Away, Automatic, Boost and Custom modes, and it can be recessed into the cover plate of certain switch systems. CFi and MV models can also be controlled with a cooker hood and can be connected to a building automation system for remote control, for example via a smartphone (KNX, Modbus, voltage signal). The units can also be connected to the free browser-based MyVallox Cloud service. Of these different control options available for the units, the option best suited to the property and lifestyle can be selected.

MC model ventilation units can be controlled with the separately sold four-speed, easy-to-use Simple Control controller, the Vallox ProControl controller, or a cooker hood. The Vallox ProControl controller has three mode selections (Home, Away and Boost). MC models can also be controlled via a 0-10 V voltage signal. MC models equipped with a ProControl controller can be connected to a Modbus network.

SE refers to a ventilation unit that can be controlled with the Vallox Digit SED controller supplied with the unit. The controller features eight-step speed control. Humidity and carbon dioxide sensors are available as optional accessories for SE models.

Why should I replace my ventilation unit?

It is worth replacing your ventilation unit because the heat recovery core in older ventilation units is often significantly smaller than that of today’s energy-efficient devices. In addition, the fans in new units often consume less electricity than those in older units. If you would like to examine the matter more closely, download the Excel file that allows you to estimate energy consumption based on the price of your own electricity contract and your own ventilation settings.

Can a ventilation unit be controlled with an app?

Vallox does not offer app-based control for its ventilation units.

MyVallox MV and CFi units can be connected to the internet and registered to MyVallox Cloud, a browser-based service that allows the unit to be controlled remotely. The units can also be connected to the MyVallox Home service via an Ethernet connection.

Older models cannot be connected to the MyVallox Cloud service.

Using and Configuring a MyVallox Ventilation Unit

How can heat recovery (HRV) be enabled during airflow adjustment in MyVallox models?

Airflows should always be adjusted with the heat recovery (HRV) function enabled, because the correct supply/exhaust air ratio is particularly important during winter conditions. When a Vallox MyVallox unit is commissioned correctly, heat recovery is active.

Commissioning should be carried out after setting the language, time, and other basic settings by selecting the “Airflow Adjustment” function through either the “Special Settings” menu or the “Settings Backup and Restore” menu.

This puts the unit into Commissioning Mode, where heat recovery is always enabled and the settings made are stored as the commissioning settings.

What is the difference between setup settings and user settings in an MV unit?

The fan, temperature and other settings made during setup are automatically saved as setup settings. Changes made later are automatically saved as user settings. Also changes made later on can be manually saved as setup settings. You can restore both setup and user settings at the controller or via remote control.

Note! When the setup settings are restored, they also overwrite the user settings. Factory settings reset erases both the setup and the user settings from the memory of the unit.

Where can I find instructions of MyVallox ventilation units?

Product-specific operating instructions, maintenance instructions, installation instructions, technical data and dimensions can be found for each MyVallox ventilation unit on the product page.

Also, you can use WebHelp that contains instructions for the setup, use and maintenance of your MyVallox ventilation unit. WebHelp is available online and is easy to use either on a computer or a mobile phone.

Can I modify the ventilation unit settings myself as a user?

The factory settings of Vallox ventilation units have been selected to ensure that the unit operates as energy-efficiently as possible. Do not change any settings unless you know what you are changing and how it will affect the operation of the unit. If you change any setting, make a note of both the original value and the new value so that you can restore it if necessary. The unit operates correctly and economically with the factory settings.

If you wish to modify the settings, you can adjust the supply air temperature, defrost settings, heating settings, control settings, external sensor settings, and cooker hood compensation settings from the Professional Settings section in the unit’s menu. More detailed instructions can be found in the unit’s user manual.

What does post-heating mean?

MyVallox CFi and MV ventilation units are equipped with an electric post-heating element inside the unit. It heats the supply air when heat recovery alone is not sufficient to raise the supply air to the desired temperature. The desired temperature can be set by the user from the unit’s control panel.

The supply air temperature should be kept as low as possible without causing a feeling of draught. If you wish to increase the supply air temperature using the post-heating coil, it should not be set higher than the room temperature, as it is not practical to try to heat the dwelling with the ventilation unit.

If the supply air temperature is increased from 16°C to 22°C, the energy consumption of the post-heating function increases several times over. However, this energy use is offset by a corresponding reduction in the building’s heating energy demand.

What is the correct supply air temperature in winter?

The supply air temperature can be freely selected according to personal preference. The recommendation is that the temperature should be a couple of degrees lower than the room temperature. The higher the supply air temperature setpoint, the more electricity the post-heating function will consume.

During winter, heat recovery always warms the supply air using heat recovered from the exhaust air, regardless of the supply air temperature setting. A low supply air temperature may affect living comfort, but it has no effect on the operation of the ventilation unit or its defrosting automation.

The supply air temperature can be set separately for each operating mode (Home / Away / Boost / Custom).

How do I get the fireplace switch function to work?

Many Vallox ventilation units include a fireplace function, which is designed to assist with lighting a fireplace. In newer units, the same function can be achieved through a Custom setting. When the flue is still cold, the fireplace function creates temporary positive pressure inside the house. The fireplace function in ventilation units is not intended to provide combustion air for the fireplace.

When the fireplace function is activated, the positive pressure is maintained for approximately 15 minutes. In the fireplace profile settings of an MV unit, it is possible to select whether the extract airflow is reduced and/or the supply airflow is increased, and by how much. The duration of the fireplace function can be freely adjusted.

The fireplace function can also be implemented using a separate switch (momentary push button).

What does Heating season mean in the heating settings of the ventilation unit?

A new functionality, heating season, was added to the heating settings of the software version 2.0.24.

The addition was made to enable as efficient heat recovery as possible in the heating season and to make it possible to cool the home with outdoor air in spring and winter, without having to change the settings of the unit according to the season. At the same time, the electricity consumption of post-heating can be minimised safely. The outdoor temperature limit for the heating season can be set between 0°C and +19°C.

When the outdoor temperature sinks below the temperature set for the heating season, the heat recovery bypass automatics and partial bypass are not in use, that is, the heat recovery is always working at full capacity. In these circumstances, the supply air temperature may be higher than the temperature set for supply air. If the heat recovery cannot heat the supply air to the set temperature, the ventilation unit uses the post-heating resistor, when necessary. When the supply air temperature is set below 15 degrees Celsius, for instance, heat recovery will heat the supply air to a higher temperature for most parts of the year. Therefore, the post-heating resistor is only on during the coldest time of the year.

Please note that if the humidity of the indoor air is high, a supply air temperature that is too low may cause condensation in the supply air valves.

When the outdoor temperature rises above the outdoor temperature set for the heating season, the ventilation unit aims to heat the supply air to the set temperature by using full or partial heat recovery. The post-heating resistor will not turn on regardless of the supply air temperature setting.

In ventilation models without a partial bypass, heat recovery may heat the supply air to a considerably higher temperature than the supply air temperature setting.

The ventilation unit needs post- and additional heating resistors during defrosting cycles, so they must not be turned off, or stopping the supply fan must be chosen as the defrosting method.

How do I use the different fan speed settings of the ventilation unit?

In the ventilation unit, you can adjust the fan speed yourself for the Home and Away modes. You can choose to switch between the Home and Away modes according to your needs, the number of occupants, and the level of activity in the home.

You can also use the Automatic mode, which uses the fan speed setting of the Away mode and the temperature settings of the Home mode. Automatic mode is recommended only for ventilation units equipped with built-in humidity and carbon dioxide (CO₂) sensors.

How does the defrosting automation in Vallox ventilation units work?

All new MyVallox ventilation units feature SmartDefrost by Vallox®, a demand-based defrosting automation system that defrosts the heat recovery core only when necessary. This ensures a high annual heat recovery efficiency. The automation continuously measures temperatures around the heat recovery core and determines whether ice is beginning to accumulate in the core. When too much ice has formed, the core is defrosted. When core bypass is in operation, the ventilation unit bypasses the supply air side of the heat recovery core during the defrost cycle, and the heat from the extract air defrosts the core. Supply air continues to flow past the core, so the supply/exhaust air balance does not change.

During the defrost cycle, the supply air is heated by the unit’s post-heating element, and larger models also include an additional heating element, so cold outdoor air is not brought indoors. During the defrost cycle, the supply air temperature may fall below the setpoint value. Supply air continues to pass through the filters normally during defrost cycles. There may occasionally be ice in the heat recovery core and condensation water at the bottom of the unit. This is normal operation of the unit.

The ventilation unit requires the post-heating and additional heating elements during defrost cycles, so they must not be disabled unless supply fan stop has been selected as the defrosting method. As a result of stopping the supply air fan, negative pressure in the building may increase during the defrost cycle.

How can I influence the temperature of the air supplied by the ventilation unit?

The temperature of the air coming from the ventilation unit should be slightly lower than the room air temperature. This allows the air to circulate in the room and enables the warmer, used air to be removed from the space.

If you want to change the temperature control method, it can be set as follows:

Software version 2.0 or later:

How do you switch heat recovery bypass on in MyVallox units in summer?

Heat recovery bypass is automatic in MyVallox models. When outdoor air is warmer than the setpoint for supply air temperature, the unit switches bypass on. If outdoor air is warmer than the air going out from the dwelling, the unit uses cool recovery: it aims at cooling down the warm outdoor air with the coolness of extract air. The status of heat recovery and bypass is shown at the controller.

There is no separate summer/winter switch, but if you want to use the cooling function in summer, you have to set it: Special settings – Sensor settings – °C adjustment mode – Cooling. With this setting, ventilation is boosted automatically when supply air can be used to cool the dwelling.

What should I do if I have problems connecting the Wi-Fi module or opening the ventilation unit’s user interface in a browser?

You can try to resolve the issue using the steps below:

Network and connection settings

  1. Switching to mobile data. The phone redirects traffic to the mobile network because the Wi-Fi network does not have internet access. Solution: turn mobile data off completely, or disable Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi → ⋮ → Advanced settings → “Switch to mobile data” / “Adaptive Wi-Fi”.
  2. Manual proxy server. A proxy has been configured in the Wi-Fi settings. Solution: in the Wi-Fi network settings, set the proxy to “None”.
  3. Stuck network connection. Solution: “Forget network” and reconnect, or restart the phone.

Chrome browser

  1. “Always use secure connections” (HTTPS enforcement). Chrome attempts to use HTTPS, but the server does not respond to it. Solution: Chrome → ⋮ → Settings → Privacy and Security → turn the option off; enter the address in the format http://….
  2. Cached HTTPS redirect (HSTS). Solution: try an Incognito tab; if it works, clear your browsing data.
  3. Data Saver / Lite Mode. Older versions of Chrome may route traffic through Google’s proxy servers. Solution: disable the feature.
  4. Outdated Chrome version. Solution: update Chrome to the latest version (Chrome → ⋮ → Settings → About Chrome).
  5. Corrupted cache or cookies. Solution: clear the cache or test in Incognito mode.

Other applications

  1. VPN. An app-based or “always-on” VPN routes traffic away from the local network. Solution: disable the VPN.
  2. Antivirus / security application. Web protection, a built-in VPN, proxy, or firewall may block access to the local IP address. Solution: temporarily close the application; if that resolves the issue, disable only the specific feature causing the problem (usually “Web Protection” or “VPN”).

How can I tell if the ventilation unit is operating correctly?

Insufficient ventilation can be recognized by stale indoor air, moisture condensing on windows and surfaces, and poor removal of odours, especially in the kitchen or bathroom. These issues may be caused, for example, by incorrectly adjusted airflow rates, malfunctioning of the ventilation unit, or dirty filters in the unit.

Regular maintenance of the entire ventilation system is extremely important to ensure that the system operates optimally and efficiently. Maintenance responsibilities are divided somewhat differently depending on the type of housing.

What is the password for the KNX file?

The file does not have a password.

Some browsers download the file as a ZIP file.

Download the file using a different browser, or open it directly from your computer’s Downloads folder, and you will be able to save it in VD5 format.

What are the correct settings of Vallox MyVallox ventilation units in winter?

The settings of Vallox ventilation units are chosen at the factory to ensure their maximum energy-efficiency. Do not change any settings if you are not absolutely sure of what you are doing and how the change will affect the unit’s operation. If you change a setting, write down the original setting and the value you changed so that you can go back if necessary. The settings made at the factory ensure the correct and economical operation of the unit.

You can freely choose the supply air temperature according to your preferences. The recommended temperature is a couple of degrees below the temperature of the room air. The higher the default supply air setting, the more electricity post-heating consumes. In winter, heat recovery always heats the supply air with heat recovered from the extract air, regardless of the supply air temperature setting. A low supply air temperature can affect the comfort of living, but it has no effect on the operation of the ventilation unit or its defrosting automation. A specific supply air temperature can be set for each mode (At home/Away/Boost/Custom).

An example of setting the supply air temperature for the At home mode:

Using the MyVallox Control control panel (four buttons at the bottom): Set the unit to At home mode. Press (i) info -> pen icon -> use the arrow to go to Supply air temperature setting -> set the supply air temperature by using the – and + buttons. Press OK to confirm the value that you have set.

Using the MyVallox Touch control panel (touch screen): Menu -> Ventilation mode settings -> At home settings -> Supply air temperature setting -> pen icon -> set supply air temperature using the – and + buttons. Press OK to confirm the value that you have set.

Other important ventilation unit settings in winter include the following:

Stopping the supply fan creates underpressure in the home during defrosting cycles.

Heating season (Factory setting 12°C) When the outdoor air temperature is higher than the set value, the heat recovery bypass automation is working and post-heating will not be switched on.

Menu -> Expert settings -> Control settings:

Humidity: Automatic. The ventilation unit sets the correct humidity percentage according to the history data of the home. The ventilation unit cannot increase the indoor air humidity in the home.

Co2 limit. (Factory setting 800 ppm). The ventilation unit boosts the ventilation if the carbon dioxide level rises above the set value. This requires a carbon dioxide sensor to be connected to the unit.

Menu -> Expert settings -> 1/0 and bus settings -> External sensor settings

External sensor setting: None (THERE MUST NOT BE Air heating in any other units except Aito Kotilämpö!). If a separate duct radiator is connected to the ventilation unit, choose the correct setting. How much less energy does MyVallox 125 CFi consume than my old ventilation unit?

The heat recovery cell in old ventilation units is often significantly smaller than in modern, energy-efficient units. In addition, the fans of new devices often need less electricity than those of older models.

Below, you can find an indicative calculation of potential savings at a price of 20c/kWh for electricity. The calculation is based on the conditions in Central Finland. In Southern Finland, the required energy for heating is about 15% lower than the calculation, and in the north, about 20% higher. The location does not affect the energy consumption of the fans.

If a cooker hood is connected to the ventilation unit in the dwelling, which kind of cooker hood can be used to control an MV unit?

Method 1: Automatic cooker hood boosting with a self-programmed digital input

With the cooker hood boosting function, the fan speed of the ventilation unit increases when the flap of the cooker hood is opened.

Automatic cooker hood boosting can be implemented by bringing a control voltage of 24 V from the timer of the flap of the cooker hood, such as Vallox KTXA, to the digital input (1 or 2). The contacts of the timer of the cooker hood close when the flap is opened. In this case, Self-programmed input has to be chosen as the function for the digital input. In the settings for the Self-programmed input, switch the timer off, set the desired power for the supply and extract air fans as a percentage as well as the desired supply air temperature. These can be different from the setpoints of the other profiles. The supply/extract ratio can also be different from other profiles if you wish to compensate for the increase in the extract air flow caused by the opening of the flap of the cooker hood.

Method 2: Controlling fan speed at the cooker hood:

You can control the fan speed of an MyVallox unit (away/home/boost) with any cooker hood that gives a voltage signal (0-10 VDC).

Note! You cannot increase fan speed at the cooker hood higher than the Boost profile.

The MV unit is controlled in parallel with the MyValloxControl controller supplied with the unit. The latest command is always the one that stays in force.

In both cases, all the functions of the MyVallox unit are also controlled at the MyValloxControl controller.

If you do not want to reset all of the unit’s settings, restore only the commissioning settings instead of the factory settings. This way, the adjustments made during the unit’s commissioning will remain in effect.

Restoring the factory settings means that the unit is returned to the state in which it was originally programmed at the factory. If the factory settings are restored, all commissioning-related settings (such as date and time settings, supply and extract airflow adjustments, and ventilation mode settings) must be configured again.

Note! Restoring the factory settings may disconnect the ventilation unit from the MyVallox Cloud service, and the unit may need to be registered with the service again.

How do I enable cooling in MyVallox ventilation units during the summer?

When the summer cooling function is enabled, the ventilation unit automatically increases the fan speed whenever outdoor air can be used to cool the dwelling.

Why does the supply air fan stop intermittently in freezing weather?

In some ventilation units, frost protection for the heat recovery core is implemented by temporarily stopping the supply air fan. When there is a risk of the heat recovery core freezing, the unit briefly shuts down the supply air fan, allowing the heat from the extract air to defrost the core.

The extract air fan continues to run at all times, so the ventilation of the dwelling does not stop.

The frequency of fan stoppages depends on:

  • The outdoor air temperature
  • The ventilation speed setting
  • The temperature and humidity of the extract air

If the fan stops very frequently, the cause may be:

  • Insufficient insulation of the extract air ducts
  • Neglected maintenance
  • A technical fault in the system.

What does the “Low Supply Air Temperature” alarm mean?

The Low Supply Air Temperature alarm means that the supply air temperature of the ventilation unit has dropped below 5°C. This alarm is activated when the unit detects excessively cold supply air, which may be caused by severe freezing weather, a mechanical fault (such as a malfunctioning bypass damper, a failed heating element, or dirty filters), or abnormal airflow settings.

When a low supply air temperature is detected for the first time, the unit stops operating. After two minutes, the unit automatically restarts and checks the supply air temperature again. If the supply air is still too cold (below 5°C), the unit stops again and will not restart until the fault condition has been acknowledged and reset.

Software update 2.0.26 introduced changes to the alarm behavior: in Custom mode or when using a programmable input, the low supply air temperature alarm is not triggered, as these are considered special operating conditions intentionally configured by the user.

If the alarm occurs repeatedly, it is recommended to check:

  • The unit’s filters
  • Airflow settings
  • Any possible mechanical faults

In some cases, a software update may help resolve the issue, but mechanical faults must be repaired separately.

Why can a ventilation unit freeze?

A ventilation unit can freeze during winter because cold outdoor air and warm indoor air meet inside the unit. When this happens, moisture can condense and turn into ice on the extract air side of the heat recovery core.

Excessive icing can impair the operation of the ventilation unit. However, modern MyVallox ventilation units are equipped with automatic defrosting automation, which detects when moisture has frozen and automatically melts the ice that has accumulated inside the unit.

Why is water dripping from the ventilation unit?

The operation of a ventilation unit naturally produces water (condensate), which should drain from the unit into the sewer system through a condensate drain pipe and water trap, both of which are installed by professionals.

If the water is not draining properly into the sewer, you should check the following:

  • Whether the condensate drain pipe is blocked
  • Whether the water trap is functioning correctly
  • The condition of the filters

If the problem persists, it is recommended to contact the nearest HVAC service provider.

Why doesn’t the MyVallox controller display the indoor temperature, or why is it displaying it incorrectly?

Check the external sensor setting:

If a separate duct coil has been connected to the ventilation unit, select the correct setting for it according to the duct coil’s instructions.

What does the “bussfault” alarm on the controller mean?

When the controller display shows “bussfault”, it usually indicates a Modbus communication problem. This can be caused by several factors, such as:

Incorrect Modbus address: Check that the ventilation unit’s Modbus address is configured correctly.

Transmission speed issues: Make sure that the Modbus baud rate is configured correctly in both the ventilation unit and the control system.

Parity errors: Verify that the Modbus parity setting is configured correctly.

Stop bits: Ensure that the Modbus stop bit setting is configured correctly.

These settings can be checked and configured using the MyVallox Control controller, MyVallox Touch controller, or the web user interface.

Ventilation Unit and Power Outage: What Should You Do?

A short and unexpected power outage does not require any special actions. During a power outage, it is a good idea to ventilate the home from time to time to allow fresh air to enter.

If the ventilation unit is equipped with a liquid-circulation coil, its freeze protection during power outages must be ensured, for example by using shut-off dampers in the outdoor air and exhaust air ducts. If the outdoor air duct of the ventilation unit is short, wind or the use of a fireplace may cause freezing air to flow into the unit even when the fans are not running.

Vallox ventilation units restart after a power outage using the same settings that were active before the interruption. The ventilation unit starts at the same speed that was in use prior to the power outage. An exception is the SE models, which restart at the so-called Basic Fan Speed after a power outage.

If the unit displays a fault indication after the power outage, restart the unit by unplugging it from the power socket for a moment and then plugging it back in. After this, the unit should restart and return to normal operation.

How do I know that heat recovery is on?

When heat recovery is on, the exhaust air is cooler than the extract air (indoor air). You can check these temperatures on the control panel display or in the MyVallox Cloud service. On cold winter days, the temperature of the exhaust air must be a few degrees higher than the temperature of the outdoor air. During defrosting cycles, the exhaust air temperature rises; this is normal.

Why does the ventilation unit bring 40-degree air into the house after a sauna even though it is cooler outside?

The ventilation unit flows outdoor air through the heat recovery cell and heats it up with the extract air. However, in the summer it is best to by-pass the heat recovery cell and bring in outdoor air without heating it. In older models, this can be achieved by adjusting the position of the summer/winter damper, or automatically in newer models. Different units have different settings that determine when the automatic heat by-pass is allowed. NOTE! If a professional has adjusted the settings during the unit deployment, they should be in order.

Ensure that the unit has clean filters so that the unit can take fresh outdoor air.

If the problem is not solved, contact the maintenance shop.

Does the fireplace switch stop the extract air fan altogether?

Not necessarily. You can choose in the fireplace profile settings of an MV unit if extract air flow is reduced and/or if supply air flow is increased, and you can also specify the amount of decrease or increase. You can freely choose the time period for the fireplace function. It is also possible to implement the fireplace function with a separate switch (push button).

The fireplace always needs to have a combustion air duct that comes directly from the outside to a location recommended by the fireplace manufacturer.

What does the supply air adjustment methods supply air, extract air, and cooling mean?

Operation of the supply air adjustment:

  • When the temperature of the air that comes through the heat recovery cell is lower than the set supply air temperature, the setting uses the heat recovery cell and the post-heating radiator to achieve the set temperature.

Operation of the cooling adjustment:

  • If the extract air temperature is lower than the set supply air temperature, the setting increases the target value of the supply air setting (max. 10°C).
  • If the extract air temperature is higher than the set supply air temperature, the setting reduces the target value of the supply air setting (max. 10 °C) and boosts the fan speed based on the need up to the fan speed setting of the Boost mode. When the Boost mode is in use, the fan speed is increased based on the need up to the maximum speed.
  • When the temperature of the air that comes through the heat recovery cell is lower than the supply air target value, the setting uses the heat recovery cell and the post-heating radiator to achieve the target value.
  • The heat recovery cell is bypassed if there is no need to heat the supply air.

The permitted range of the supply air setting is +5…+25 °C. The recommended setting is +15 °C.
The post-heating radiator is only used in the heat recovery mode and during defrosting, and when the winter setting is higher than the outdoor temperature.

To change the temperature adjustment method, do as follows:

  • Software version 2.0 or newer: Settings – Expert settings – Control settings – °C adjustment method.
  • Older software versions: Settings – Expert settings – Sensor settings – °C adjustment method.

How can I change the fan speed set for Home mode?

A higher or lower number of occupants than expected may create the feeling that the ventilation is not suitable for your needs. The fan speed in Home, Away, or Boost mode can be adjusted if necessary. Instructions for doing so can be found in your ventilation unit’s settings. Changing the fan speed in these modes does not alter the supply/exhaust air balance of the ventilation system.

Why should the grille never be covered with an insect net?

The surface area of the net installed over the grille is much smaller than that of the unit’s filter, which means that it will become blocked much quicker than the coarse filter of the ventilation unit. This would lead to extra maintenance needs. One reason why the use of the net is explicitly prohibited is that the grille is difficult to access, for which reason it is not maintained regularly. We have seen places where no outdoor air has been blown into the apartment for years through the unit.

Another reason is that a net installed over the outdoor grille increases the flow resistance even when it is clean. It decreases the air flow and increases the noise level of the ventilation system.

Vallox ventilation units have a two-phased supply air filtering. The fine filter cassette filters the smallest of particles, whilst the coarse filter stops larger dust particles, preventing the fine filter from becoming blocked as quickly. Therefore, it is often advisable to hoover the coarse filters also between filter changes during the “dirtiest” season.

What is the difference between a cooker hood and a cooker extractor fan?

A cooker hood is equipped with a grease filter, lighting, and controls that can be used to control the ventilation system through the hood. A cooker extractor fan has its own motor and fan, which actively remove air.

Some cooker hoods can be connected to an in-line duct fan, which effectively turns the hood into a cooker extractor fan. Cooker hoods compatible with a duct fan include:

How does cooker hood extraction work?

The extraction airflow of a cooker hood draws air into the hood ductwork when the hood is in operation. The shape and size of the hood affect how effectively cooking fumes, steam, and odors are removed.

Cooker hood extraction can be implemented with a system that is separate from the building’s main ventilation system, using an in-line duct fan or a roof exhaust fan. Alternatively, the cooker hood can be connected to the building’s exhaust ventilation system through a ventilation unit.

How can a cooker hood be used to control a ventilation unit?

Method 1: Automatic cooker hood boost using a programmable digital input

With the cooker hood boost function, the ventilation unit’s fan speed increases when the cooker hood damper is opened.

Automatic cooker hood boost can be implemented by supplying a 24 V control voltage from the cooker hood damper timer (for example, from a Vallox KTXA cooker hood) to Digital Input 1 or 2. The timer contacts in the cooker hood close when the damper is opened.

The function of the digital input must be set to Programmable Input. In the Programmable Input settings:

  • Disable the timer.
  • Set the desired supply air fan and extract air fan power levels as percentages.
  • Set the desired supply air temperature.

These values can differ from the settings used in other operating profiles. The supply/extract air balance can also be configured differently from other operating profiles if compensation is needed for the increased extract airflow caused by opening the cooker hood damper.

Method 2: Fan speed control from the cooker hood

The fan speed of a MyVallox unit (Away / Home / Boost) can be controlled by any cooker hood that provides a 0-10 VDC control signal.

Note! The fan speed cannot be increased from the cooker hood beyond the fan speed defined in the Boost profile.

The MyVallox unit can be controlled simultaneously with the supplied MyVallox Control controller. The most recent command always takes precedence.

In both cases, all MyVallox unit functions can also be controlled from the MyVallox Control controller.

How is a cooker hood installed?

The installation of a cooker hood should always be carried out with the assistance of a professional. Ensure that the cooker hood is suitable in terms of dimensions and that the installation height is correct. Prepare the mounting either directly on the wall or underneath a kitchen cabinet.

Connect the cooker hood correctly to the ventilation system and complete the electrical connections. Test the operation of the hood, the airtightness of the ductwork, the exhaust airflow, and the functionality of any additional features.

How should a cooker hood be used correctly?

Always switch on the cooker hood or cooker extractor fan when cooking. If the hood has adjustable power settings, you can select the extraction level that most effectively removes cooking fumes and steam from the room air.

If the hood has an extendable steam collection section, it should be opened fully while cooking. This allows the hood to capture cooking fumes and steam over the widest possible area.

It is also recommended to keep the cooker hood or extractor fan running for a short period after cooking has finished. This helps ensure that all contaminants are removed from the indoor air and that the indoor environment remains fresh.

The post-operation period also ensures that any water vapor in the exhaust duct is completely removed.

How do I clean the grease filter?

Cleaning the grease filter helps ensure adequate exhaust airflow and should be carried out regularly, at least 1-2 times per month.

Warm water and a grease-removing detergent (such as dishwashing liquid) are suitable for cleaning the grease filter.

The grease filter must be allowed to dry completely before it is reinstalled.

How is a cooker hood maintained?

Grease stains resulting from cooking should be cleaned immediately, and the exterior surfaces of the cooker hood should be wiped regularly. A mild detergent solution is suitable for cleaning the exterior surfaces of the cooker hood.

In addition, the cooker hood filter should be cleaned at least 1-2 times per month.

For ventilation ducts, you can choose between various steel duct solutions or plastic-based systems, such as the Vallox BlueSky ventilation system. The choice depends on factors such as the building structure and the available installation space for the ductwork.

BlueSky is an environmentally friendly choice, as it does not generate offcuts and waste pieces in the same way as other duct materials.

Is a plastic ventilation duct fire-safe?

The fire safety of the Vallox BlueSky system has been verified by a VTT research report.

When installing the BlueSky system inside P3-class buildings, the ducts must be enclosed with a material rated at least D-s2, d2, or covered with mineral wool insulation.

Which ventilation system is suitable for a confined installation space?

The Vallox BlueSky air distribution system is suitable even for confined installation spaces, such as low suspended ceilings. It can be installed easily inside partition walls, intermediate floors, suspended ceilings, enclosures, or concrete structures.

How to select a duct size?

In detached houses, the typical duct diameter is 160-200 mm. In the Vallox BlueSky system, however, air is carried in a large duct only as far as the distribution box. From there, an individual flexible 75 mm duct is routed to each air valve.

For airflow rates exceeding 8 dm³/s per valve, the use of two ducts in parallel is recommended. Using two smaller ducts makes the ductwork easier to install in confined spaces.

The use of one or two ducts also makes airflow measurement easier. Therefore, it is advisable to create the ventilation design specifically for the BlueSky system in order to take full advantage of its benefits.

Are silencers required in the ductwork?

Yes, silencers should generally be installed in all ventilation duct systems. In a BlueSky duct system, the silencers are installed between the ventilation unit and the distribution boxes.

Can the sound insulation of ventilation ductwork be improved afterwards?

The sound insulation of ventilation ductwork should be inspected regularly for possible damage, wear, and loose seals. Seals and insulation materials used for sound insulation may deteriorate or become damaged over time, reducing their effectiveness. Condensation water can also damage insulation materials if the drainage system is not functioning properly.

The repair and replacement of sound insulation is generally the responsibility of a professional.

Which duct system is suitable for a renovation project?

The BlueSky duct system is easy to clean, as the ducts can be disconnected from the distribution boxes and cleaned completely in a single operation. In addition, the distribution boxes themselves can be opened, allowing them to be cleaned from the inside as well.

When is a duct radiator used?

A duct radiator is used in Vallox ventilation units when there is a need to provide additional heating or cooling of the supply air before it reaches the occupied spaces. The specific application depends on where the radiator is installed.

If the radiator is installed in the outdoor air duct, it can be used for:

  • Both preheating and cooling
  • Preheating only
  • Cooling only

If the duct radiator is installed in the supply air duct, it can be used for cooling only.

How is a duct radiator used?

A radiator connected to the collector circuit of a ground-source heat pump is not available as a built-in option in Vallox ventilation units, but an MLV radiator installed in the ductwork can be connected to them. Control of the pump and solenoid valve for the cooling and preheating circuit can be provided by the MyVallox unit’s automation system.

The 24 V control voltage can be used to control a contactor that starts the pump and opens the solenoid valve (External electrical connection, Duct radiator connection).

Remember to connect the wire between RM/I and +24 V.

How is a duct radiator controlled by a ventilation unit?

When an MV ventilation unit is used to control a duct radiator valve and actuator, it is recommended that the unit is running software version 2.0 or later. Control of a radiator installed in the supply air duct cannot be implemented with older software versions. If the unit is registered to the MyVallox Cloud service, it will always have the latest software version.

In addition to the radiator, a separate NTC temperature sensor (4109577) must be installed in the duct. The sensor is supplied with the Vallox MLV radiator and should be installed either before the radiator in the outdoor air duct or after the radiator in the supply air duct. The duct sensor temperature reading can be viewed at:

The External Sensor Setting must be configured for either outdoor air duct radiator control or supply air duct radiator control, depending on the radiator installation location:

In the Duct Radiator Settings, select whether the radiator will be used for cooling, heating, or both.

The duct radiator can be configured to operate automatically or manually:

Automatic — In summer, the supply air temperature is maintained at the configured temperature setpoint. In winter, the duct radiator starts when the outdoor air temperature falls below the winter setting.

Manual — In summer, the duct radiator starts when the outdoor air temperature rises above the summer setting. In winter, the duct radiator starts when the outdoor air temperature falls below the winter setting.

To prevent condensation risk in the supply air duct, you can set the supply air limit control mode to either automatic or manual:

Automatic — The supply air limit is adjusted automatically based on the dew point of the extract air. If the supply air temperature falls too low, the duct radiator stops.

Manual — The supply air limit can be set manually. When the supply air temperature falls to the configured limit, the duct radiator stops.

How does a wall air blow-out and intake unit work?

The Out/In Vario is designed for use as a residential exhaust air blow-out and outdoor air intake unit. Thanks to the patented design of the Vallox Out/In air blow-out and intake unit, the exhaust air discharge velocity can be adjusted in multiple stages, resulting in low pressure loss.

Due to its design, the unit has excellent water separation performance and is not prone to freezing. This significantly improves the operation of the ventilation system.

The unit is quick and easy to install and requires no maintenance.

The air blow-out and intake sections can be positioned separately, even on opposite sides of the building. This provides greater flexibility in building design and makes it easier to achieve the required minimum distances from factors that may reduce air quality (such as waste collection areas, adjacent balconies, etc.).

The unit’s handedness can be selected easily. The device is available in four different colours: white, brick red, black and grey.

In what types of houses is wall air blow-out suitable?

Wall air blow-out is a cost-effective solution for both apartment buildings and detached houses. By using wall air blow-out, significant cost savings can be achieved in the construction of the ventilation shaft.

Wall air blow-out is not suitable for houses located on small plots or for buildings that are situated very close to one another.

Does the Vallox Out/In unit have SERT R074 certification?

Yes, Vallox wall air blow-out units comply with the certification criteria of SERT R074: Exhaust Air Wall Blow-out Unit Certification.

How does an air heating unit work?

The Vallox Aito Kotilämpö unit includes a 6-row liquid-circulated heating radiator in its air heating section. This enables the dwelling to be heated efficiently while maintaining comfort without drafts, even with a relatively low recirculation airflow rate.

The output of the heating radiator is controlled from the same controller used for ventilation. However, the recirculation air fan has its own four-speed controller, with all speed levels being continuously pre-adjustable.

The ventilation section features a counterflow heat exchanger, and the annual heat recovery efficiency of the unit is approximately 77%.

Ventilation is controlled using a MyVallox controller or via the home network, building automation system, or cloud service.

The unit can be connected to all heating systems, including low-temperature ground-source heat pump systems.

The unit is equipped with built-in carbon dioxide (CO₂) and humidity sensors, which automatically boost ventilation as needed in response to changes in CO₂ levels and indoor humidity.

The MC defrosting automation maintains a high heat recovery efficiency even in severe freezing conditions and does not increase negative pressure in the building.

How is a new air heating unit installed?

The installation of an air heating unit is always the responsibility of qualified professionals. During installation, it is important to consider the heating system in use, the condition and insulation of the ductwork, water and electrical connections, the operation of the distribution box, and condensate drainage.

How does heat recovery work in the Aito Kotilämpö?

The annual heat recovery efficiency of the Aito Kotilämpö is approximately 77%.

The Vallox Aito Kotilämpö uses the same MyVallox Control controller as Vallox ventilation units. The supply air temperature displayed by the controller represents the temperature of the air leaving the heat recovery (HRV) core.

During the heating season, the controller does not display the temperature of the air being supplied to the recirculation air duct. Instead, an external sensor measures the room air temperature, and the heating coil aims to deliver recirculated air at the requested temperature.

Vallox Aito Kotilämpö Air Heating Unit and Power Outage

The Vallox Aito Kotilämpö air heating unit restarts after a power outage using the same settings that were active before the interruption.

In the Vallox Aito Kotilämpö, the liquid-circulated radiator is located in the lower section of the unit, which means that the risk of freezing is low unless the power outage lasts for several days and the building temperature drops significantly.

By opening the Aito Kotilämpö access door, you can check the temperature in the lower part of the unit and, if necessary, allow warm room air to reach the radiator.

If the Aito Kotilämpö displays a fault indication after a power outage, contact your nearest service provider.

Why does Vallox Aito Kotilämpö report an error during the defrosting cycle?

If the control panel of Aito Kotilämpö reports an error, check the main settings first.

  • Defrosting method: Bypass, Indoor %Rh 0, and Outdoor air °C 20.
  • Heating settings: Heating method Electrical resistor (Must never be turned off!) Post-heating None.
  • Control settings: °C adjustment method Extract air and Humidity Automatic.
  • 1/0 and bus settings: External sensor Setting: Air heating. Relay settings: Air heating.

If the error persists, carry out a heater test as follows: When at least 5 minutes has passed since the error message disappeared, check the supply air temperature (°C) from the temperature display of the At home mode and write it down.  Next, test the additional heater. When the test has been on for a couple of minutes, you can exit the test. The supply air temperature should now be higher than previously in the temperature display of the At home mode. If this is not the case, the additional heating resistor or the relay that controls it is faulty. There is no need to carry out a post-heating test; in fact, the test cannot even be carried out, as the ventilation part of Aito Kotilämpö does not have a post-heating resistor.
